Claras ("we," "our," or "us") operates the Claras browser extension and the website located at claras.app (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Service. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By accessing or using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

1. INFORMATION WE COLLECT

1.1 Information You Provide Directly

Account Information: When you create an account or subscribe to a paid plan, we collect your email address and payment information. Payment processing is handled by our third-party payment processor; we do not store your full credit card number.

API Keys: If you provide your own API keys (e.g., for AI model providers), these are stored locally in your browser's extension storage and are never transmitted to our servers.

Support Requests: If you contact us for support, we collect the information you provide in your communication.

1.2 Information Collected Automatically

YouTube Video URLs: When you use the transcription feature, the URL of the YouTube video you are transcribing is sent to our transcription service provider to generate the transcript.

Usage Data: We may collect anonymized usage data such as the number of transcriptions performed, features used, and general interaction patterns to improve the Service.

Browser and Device Information: We may collect browser type, browser version, and operating system for compatibility and troubleshooting purposes.

1.3 Information We Do NOT Collect

- We do not collect or store the content of your transcripts on our servers. Transcripts are processed in real-time and delivered directly to your browser.

- We do not collect your browsing history outside of YouTube video URLs that you explicitly choose to transcribe.

- We do not collect any data from YouTube pages you visit without actively using the Claras extension.

- We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.

2. HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

- To Provide the Service: Processing your transcription requests, delivering AI-generated summaries and chat responses, and enabling all core features of the extension.
- To Process Payments: Managing subscriptions, processing payments, and maintaining billing records.
- To Improve the Service: Analyzing anonymized usage patterns to improve features, fix bugs, and develop new functionality.
- To Communicate with You: Responding to support requests, sending service-related announcements, and providing updates about your account.
- To Ensure Security: Detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access to the Service.

3. THIRD-PARTY SERVICE PROVIDERS

We use the following categories of third-party service providers to operate the Service:

- Transcription API Provider: We use a third-party API to transcribe YouTube videos. When you request a transcription, the YouTube video URL is sent to this provider. Please refer to their privacy policy for information on how they handle data.
- AI Model Providers: AI features (summaries, chat, table of contents) are powered by third-party AI model providers. The transcript text is sent to these providers to generate responses. These providers process data in accordance with their own privacy policies.
- Payment Processors: We use third-party payment processors to handle subscription billing. We do not have access to your full payment card details.
- Analytics: We may use anonymized analytics tools to understand how the Service is used. These tools do not collect personally identifiable information.

4. DATA STORAGE AND SECURITY

- Local Storage: Your preferences, API keys, highlights, notes, and cached transcripts are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API. This data remains on your device and is not transmitted to our servers unless explicitly required for a feature to function.
- Security Measures: We implement commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction.
- Data Retention: We retain account information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you the Service. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it.
